Caravan Condition.

  • Coupling and safety chains are in good condition.
  • Brakes and external lights work correctly.
  • Wheels, tyres, wheel bearings and the suspension are in good condition, especially if the caravan has been sitting idle for some time.
  • Tyres are of the same type and size and have a minimum tread depth of 1.6 mm.
  • Tyre placard has the recommended tyre size, load rating and tyre pressures.
  • You should also ensure your caravan has a yearly service by a mechanic.
 

Towing.

  • Allow extra space between vehicles.
  • Ensure your load is balanced, and has the correct weight distribution.

  • Pull over regularly to allow following vehicles to overtake.
 

Weight Distribution.

  • Balanced load. A balanced load will ensure easier towing and a quality ride.
 

Brake usage.

  • When going downhill, always slow down and engage a lower gear before actually reaching the downhill section of the road. This reduces the need for heavy braking while going downhill. Excessive speed or sudden braking while travelling downhill could create an unstable situation.
  • Minimise brake usage as much as practical, by leaving additional space between vehicles and slowing down prior to any intersection.
  • Observing the traffic some distance ahead; it is often possible to avoid unnecessary braking..
 

Camping list.

  • Minimise the items you carry, whilst ensuring you have the thigns you need. A checklist is great way of ensuring you dont miss anyhting, and can be tuned over time to suit your exact needs.
 

Insurance.

  • Ensure your vehicle and van are comprehensively insured before you leave home.
 

Tow vehicle.

  • The most suitable towing vehicle is one which is heavier than the caravan it tows and which has enough power to permit quick and safe passing manoevers.

Pretowing check list.

  • Close all windows, roof hatches.
  • Safety catch on fridge locked.
  • Stove lid shut and locked.
  • Cupboards are closed.
  • Gas bottle turned off.
  • Power lead (240 volt) , water hose disconnected.
  • Corner jack stands secured
 

Vehicle / Carvan Connection.

  • Check towbar coupling is positioned correctly.
  • Remove jockey wheel
  • Connect D shackles to safety chains and towbar
  • Connect trailer plug
  • Connect hitch or level rides if applicable
  • Upon leaving the park or after 5 minutes, check all connections are secure.
